The main highway from Cancun South to Tulum Highway 307 has been under some terrific improvements. The Mexican government has built a 4 lane highway from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen which has drastically improved the safety and quality of the road all the way to Tulum.
When coming from the north, you will see the sign to Akumal, "Akumal Playa." You will need to drive south past about 1/2 mile to the round about near Bahia Principe, and come back north so you can veer to the east at Akumal. When ever turning left in Mexcio, look both ways carefully, and then cross back over the highway.
