The main highway from Cancun South to Tulum Highway 307 has been under some terrific improvements. The Mexican government has built a 4 lane highway from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen which has drastically improved the safety and quality of the road all the way to Akumal.
When coming from the north, you will see the sign to Akumal, "Akumal Playa." You will need to turn right, instead of turning left. There is a circular driveway that you will take. Look both ways carefully, and then cross back over the highway and try to turn left into Akumal as you used to do. There are new arrows to indicate this. This is true of most major exits off the new improved section of Highway 307.
