How To Get There
The closest international airport is in Cancun, Mexico. Akumal is about 90km south of the Cancun airport, which should take a little over an hour to get to if driving straight there. (There are also airports in Cozumel and Merida, but it would be a little bit harder to arrange your transportation to the Akumal area from these two cities.) Check out our links page for airfares on the major airlines. Many charter airlines also fly into Cancun. The charters are a great option, as they offer lower airfare typically, but often fewer flight choices.
From Cancun, there are a few ways to get to your destination. The mode of transportation Caribbean Fantasy recommends is to rent an automobile in Cancun. Most all rental agencies have offices at or near the airport. It is best to make a reservation for your transportation in advance. Check out our links page for prices from the major agencies. Rental cars offer the most freedom for the tourist. Other ways to get to your lodging are private shuttles, taxis and public buses. Private shuttles can also be arranged prior to arriving, and are best for very small or very large groups. Taxis can be expensive. Buses are very inexpensive but fairly adventurous.

Some people like to use one of the transport services to and from the airport, and then rent a car in Akumal.

Buses and less expensive transportation:
Colectivos: These are the white vans (10-14 passengers) that run north and south along Highway 307. They transport locals and tourists anywhere between Tulum and Playa Del Carmen. Simply stand along Highway 307 and wave when you see the Colectivo coming. They will stop if they have room and you just tell the driver where you want to go. A Colectivo will usually come by every 10-15 minutes. Akumal to Playa is approximately $2USD. Colectivos normally run daily from 7:00am until 9:00pm.
Buses: Mayab is an inexpensive service that runs up and down the highway. No timetable, just cross your fingers. There are a number of other buses that run up and down Highway 307 from Cancun all the way to Chetumal and additional ones that run throughout the Yucatan. The buses are a good mode of transportation; clean, comfortable, air-conditioned and they have movies. Bus stations are located in Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancun. Buses normally run from 7:00am until 11:00pm.
There is also a bus line that runs from the Playa del Carmen bus terminal to the Cancun airport. If you choose this transportation you could use a cab or Colectivo (white van) between Playa del Carmen bus terminal. and your villa. Tickets are 65 pesos and the ticket counter at the airport is on the north end of the main terminal, against the windows (north is past the Hasta la Vista restaurant, past the departure area). The bus ride is 50-60 minutes.
